Mrs. Abie Plastic Bottles Recycling Project,
Ikeja GRA

Waste Management – Recycling

Overview

After the death of her husband in 2017, Mrs. Abie has been picking up plastic bottles for sale to earn a living in Shogunle Street, Oshodi, where she lives with her three children. Upon our engagement with Mrs. Abie in August 2022, we were able to increase her monthly yield from 5,000 bottles to approximately 66,000 within the first month. This increased her earnings and created more jobs for pickers, loaders, and drivers while also positively increasing her environmental impact.

How we did this

  1. Location expansion : We introduced Mrs. Abie’s team to the surroundings of large supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants where the potential for plastic waste yield is high. Ikeja GRA has so far been the most profitable and safest place for her team to carry out these operations.
  2. Buyer Sourcing: We connected Mrs. Abie to more buyers who offered higher prices per kg of pet bottles.
  3. Carbon offset estimation and credit generation
  4. Funding: We have been supported by a few individuals who are happy about our vision and have voluntarily purchased our credits. We have given out credit offset certificates to these individuals.

Continuity Plan

  1. Expansion:
  • Continuously identify and expand to new locations with high potential for plastic waste yield, such as residential areas, schools, and offices.
  • Collaborate with local authorities to secure permission to operate in new areas.
  • Continuously monitor the profitability and safety of each location.
  1. Sourcing:
  • Regularly engage new buyers who are willing to pay higher prices per kg of pet bottles.
  • Develop strong relationships with existing buyers to ensure long-term sustainability.
  1. Carbon Offset:
  • Continuously estimate and calculate the carbon offset generated by Mrs. Abie’s operations using appropriate data and methods.
  • Regularly issue carbon offset certificates to individuals and organizations who purchase credits.
  • Seek new funding sources to support the carbon offset program, such as grants and investment funds.
  1. Funding:
  • Continuously engage with individuals and organizations who support the vision and are willing to purchase carbon offset certificates.
  • Regularly evaluate the financial sustainability of the operations and seek new funding sources as needed.
  1. Human Resource Management:
  • Continuously train and support Mrs. Abie and her team on the best practices for plastic waste collection and segregation.
  • Regularly evaluate the team structure and make changes as needed to ensure efficient operations.
  • Develop a retention program to retain key team members and minimize turnover.
  • Promote gender equality by ensuring equal opportunities and fair treatment for all team members, regardless of gender.
  1. Record Keeping and Reporting:
  • Regularly maintain accurate records of all operations, including the number of plastic bottles collected, carbon offset generated, and funding received.
  • Regularly prepare reports to share with stakeholders on the progress and impact of the operations, including data on carbon credit generation.
  1. Review and Evaluation:
  • Regularly review and evaluate the continuity plan to ensure its effectiveness and make changes as needed.
  • Continuously monitor the impact of the operations and make changes as needed to maximize positive impact, including data on carbon credit generation.
